Balanced attack keys women's basketball win over UMPI
The University of Maine at Augusta women’s basketball team used a 23 point second quarter to carry them to a 69-52 win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle Monday night in non-conference action at the Augusta Civic Center. Jamie Plummer and Caitlin LaFountain each turned in double-double performances and all seven Moose players scored in the win as UMA improved to 9-3 on the season.
AUGUSTA, Maine - The University of Maine at Augusta women's basketball team used a 23 point second quarter to carry them to a 69-52 win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle Monday night in non-conference action at the Augusta Civic Center. Jamie Plummer and Caitlin LaFountain each turned in double-double performances and all seven Moose players scored in the win as UMA improved to 9-3 on the season.
The Owls (0-5) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on back to back buckets from Sydney Churchill, who scored a game-high 25 points on the night, but LaFountain (Topsham, Maine) responded with a pair of layups to tie the game at four. LaFoutain scored eight of her 15 points in the opening period as the Moose (9-3, 4-0 YSCC) went into the second quarter with the 16-12 advantage.
UMA got hot from in the second period, shooting 55% from the floor, led by seven points from Carmen Bragg (Washburn, Maine) and six points from Plummer. The Owls closed to within three points with 8:11 remaining in the quarter on a jumper from Churchill, but head coach Jennifer Laney's team responded with a 10-2 run to carry a 39-24 lead into the locker room.
UMPI closed to within nine points with 8:43 remaining in the third quarter, but senior Darby Toth (Nort Port, Fla.) answered with an immediate jumper to keep the lead in double-digits.
Plummer (Richmond, Maine) was 9-15 from the field in scoring a team-high 20 points and 10 rebounds while LaFountain also had 10 boards to go along with her 15 points. Bragg was in double-digits with ten points, and Lindsay Clark (Cornish, N.H.) came off the bench to score eight. Toth finished the night with a stat line of sixes, hitting the mark in rebounds, assists, steals and points.
Amanda Hotham was the other double-digit scorer for UMPI. UMA returns to conference action on Tuesday evening when the team travels to New Hampshire to take on Yankee Small College Conference West Division leading NHTI, who carries a 4-1 conference mark and 7-3 overall record into the game.
