Men’s Basketball falls in second half opener
The University of Maine at Augusta men’s basketball team was unable to overcome a hot start by Berkeley College of New York City Saturday night, falling 112-73 Saturday night in the opening round of the NHTI-Holiday Inn New Year’s Men’s Classic.
CONCORD, N.H. - The University of Maine at Augusta men's basketball team was unable to overcome a hot start by Berkeley College of New York City Saturday night, falling 112-73 Saturday night in the opening round of the NHTI-Holiday Inn New Year's Men's Classic.
The Knights had the hot-hand early, shooting 62.5% from the field in the opening half to carry a 58 -24 lead into the second half. The Moose battled back to score 49 points in the second half. Four starters scored in double-digits for UMA, who was led by senior Brandon Rogers (Turlock, Calif.), who scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed ten boards.
Keith Chesley (Clinton, Maine) also turned in a double-double performance, with 17 points and and ten rebounds, while freshman Noah Thompson (Yuma, Ariz.) scored 17 points, including five triples, and Caleb McGuire (Whitefield, Maine) scored a season-high 16 points on the night.
For the game, the Moose shot 45.8% from the field and almost 40% from behind the arc. The Knights carried the advantage in rebounds, 37-31 and also scored 32 points off of the bench. Berkeley was led by Stephon Jennings, who scored a game-high 25 points.
UMA returns to action tomorrow when the team takes on Springfield Technical Community College tomorrow at noon in the second round of tournament play.
