Women's Cross Country Team Headed to Nationals
AUGUSTA, ME-- It has been a phenomenal week for the UMA women’s cross country team. After a very successful trip to Lake Placid, NY for the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) Championship meet, they were awarded the YSCC Sportsmanship Award for the season. “I could not be more proud of this team,” said Head Coach Warren Newton. “These student-athletes have represented UMA in a way that we hope every athlete does, with respect of all those involved in the sport.” Overall team attitudes and demeanor towards competitors, coaches, and spectators earn this award. At the end of the season, coaches from each school vote on who they felt displayed the most sportsmanship over the season. This high honor was earned by each and every UMA runner.
A few days after being awarded with the YSCC Sportsmanship honors, the UMA cross country team found out that their times qualify them to attend the USCAA National Cross Country Championship hosted by SUNY ESF. The team will head to Syracuse, NY on Thursday, November 6th and compete the following day in a 6K event at 11:00a.m. Salena Sawtelle (Orono, ME), Tali Amero (Windham, ME), Allie Floyd (Auburn, ME), and Elise Bolduc (Saint-Joseph-De-Beauce, QC) will be representing the UMA Lady Moose at the National Championship. This will be the first time in school history that the UMA cross country team will compete in the USCAA National Championship meet. While in NY, the runners will also attend a banquet to celebrate their success with the USCAA.
On behalf of the entire athletic department, we would like to congratulate the UMA cross country team on their success and wish them the best of luck at Nationals! GO MOOSE!
