Carmen Bragg Awarded Distinguished Student Award

Augusta, ME – At the UMA graduation on May 12th Dean of Student’s Sheri Fraser presented senior cross-country and basketball athlete Carmen Bragg with the Kathleen Dexter Distinguished Student Award. This award is given annually to one of UMA’s top

all-around graduating students and the criteria for selection includes:

 1. Academic Success

2. Participation and leadership in co-curricular activities; and

3. Service to the wider community

 Sheri had this to say about Carmen Bragg when presenting her the Distinguished Student Award at graduation:

 On Athletics:

“She was a captain of the UMA Women’s Basketball team and scored her 1000 the career point in her senior season. She was named as the Yankee Small College Conference Athlete of Week for both cross-country and basketball. In 2017, she was awarded the USCAA National Student-Athlete of the Year for Women’s Basketball Division II; an honor awarded for academic excellence, service to her community, as well as her impact on the court.”

On Academics:

“As an Academic, Carmen achieved a stellar GPA, added rigor by completing UMA’s

Honors Program and has appeared on the dean’s list every semester. She took a deep

dive into her major through independent research and readings – I will tell you more

about this in a moment.”

On Community:

“In the community, Carmen has volunteered for the Hallowell Food Bank and supported

food drives and blood drives on campus. She was a member of the 2017 Team Haiti and

joined other biology majors to raise funds and to work at a center for malnourished

children. Inspired by this work, Carmen earned her Certified Nursing Assistant

credential.”

Athletic Director and women’s basketball coach Jennifer Laney had this to say about Carmen after graduation, “This is an incredible recognition for Carmen and it is truly deserved. She embodies everything that we want out of our student athletes. Carmen will leave a lasting impression on UMA Athletics for years to come.”
